The sharp eyes of Adam Kroukamp spotted a beige -coloured baby Cape Dwarf Chameleon, about 2.5cm in size, creeping along a dried grass stem. 21 October : Just Earth jamboree
The air was filled with the sounds of drumbeats and children chanting, as 200 learners and adults joined the Just Earth Procession from Retreat Civic to Princess Vlei. The blustery southeaster set the tassels and wings of the giant bird puppets and dream catchers rippling in the breeze.. Read More

5 April : Gentle eyes and a very listening ear
The Princess Vlei community has been greatly saddened by the loss of George Davis, who passed away on 27 February this year after a long illness.
George was a founding member of the Princess Vlei Forum in 2012, but his involvement in Princess Vlei goes back to 2008.... Read more.

The quiet streets of Sasmeer Estate came to life on Saturday as the Princess Vlei Dance Weaver procession wound through the neighbourhood. Heralded by twenty-five young drummers, the procession of over 200 nature enthusiasts included eighty young 'dance-weavers', teachers, volunteers and performers, as well as colourful banners and ten giant bird puppets... The Princess Vlei Forum's 10th AGM provided a wonderful opportunity for old and new Princess Vlei champions to come together and plot out the future of the organisation.Thirty-four people attended the meeting at St Stephen's church in Bergvliet,. The hand-painted Save Princess Vlei banner was a good reminder of how this organisation began in 2012... Read more.

On August 9 th , Women’s Day, women and men, young and old and from diverse backgrounds gathered to plant 1000 seedlings or ‘plugs’ in the seep on the west side of the Vlei. The eastern shore of the Princess Vlei is often said to resemble a young woman’s profile Read more.

45 Primary School learners from Floreat and Levana Primary came to plant at Princess Vlei on July 22. The learners were planting on the Northern Shore, in the restoration area adjoining Briana Crescent. As this part of Princess Vlei was once Cape Flats Sand Fynbos, a critically endangered vegetation type, restoring the plant life there has enabled the re-establishment of many Red List species. Leon was speaking at the Hackathon on 9 April. He joined fifty others in clearing the Port Jacksons and litter in the dunes behind the Retreat Civic. Read more.

We are Western Leopard Toads. We like to breed at Princess Vlei because it has a lot of water, food and plants. There is food for us, like snails, bees, water beetles and bugs.... So said Cllr Kevin Southgate at the unveiling of the Provincial Heritage Site Plaque on 12 October. Cllr Southgate commented that he was fighting for Princess Vlei long before he was a councillor. ‘I remember standing on Prince George Drive with a placard reading, ‘No to the mall of death, Yes to the Princess.’ Read more.

The ‘octopus’ plant, better known as a waxberry, or Morella cordifolia, is a sprawling member of the Dune Strandveld plant community, and was one of many wonderful plants featured on the Princess Vlei Forum Spring Walk on October 2. This plant is Skilpad Bessies, they are fynbos plants, so it makes a habitat for the tortoise.’ So said Mushfeeq Davids, a grade 8 learner at Lotus High. On Halloween, twenty volunteers of all ages gave up trick or treating to come to Princess Vlei, to gather seeds for a variety of annual daisies. The seeds will be stored over summer and broadcast in autumn 2021 in the new restoration areas. Princess Vlei is home to several flowering annuals. Read More

Aug 25: A sad goodbye to a wonderful friend
The Princess Vlei Forum lost a very good friend with the passing of Graham Lashbrooke, who died on Midwinter’s Day, 21st June 2020, at the age of 80.
From the founding of Princess Vlei Forum in 2012, Graham and his wife Mea were enthusiastic supporters of the campaign to save Princess Vlei from the destructive development of a shopping mall. Read More

On Saturday 25 July the Princess Vlei Forum (PVF), in partnership with the Botanical Society of South Africa Kirstenbosch Branch, held a planting event at The Greater Princess Vlei conservation area in Cape Town. More than 3 000 plants were planted on the day. The extinct in the wild Whorled Heath (Erica verticillata) and critically endangered Serruria foeniculacea were reintroduced for the first time. June 7: New Life under lockdown
The Covid19 Lockdowns have put a temporary brake on our community and school planting. However, plants need to be put in the ground early in the rainy season, and sadly we can't wait until lock down is lifted and our young and old nature guardians are able tohelp us. Alex Lansdowne has been hard at work preparing and smoking the seeds that have been collected especially for restoration . Read More

Just before the lockdown was declared, 30 young scientists and nature guardians from Levana Primary Harmony Primary came to Princess Vlei to find out about all the species that make up a wetland family. Before setting out, Forum members reminded the learners to treat all the creatures they encountered with great respect, and to ensure that none were harmed in the process of studying them. Read More
